Section 2: Document Sizes

You will need to start by opening a New Document. To do this, click on the "New" document button. Doing this will bring up your "Document Settings" screen as seen below:

The initial default will be "Letter" size, which is a standard 8 ½ x 11 inch paper size. Whenever changed, the program will default to the most recently selected document size when selecting to open a new document. Here you will select your document size according to the measurements of your paper or other material being used.

When you wish to utilize the entire area of the cutting mat (Carrier Sheet), please check the option labeled "Use Carrier Sheet" in order to provide the accurate cutting area on your screen.

When finished selecting your material size, click on "OK".

The default list of pre-determined paper sizes includes 8.5x11 Letter, A4 and others. You can also create a custom document size.

HOW TO: Create a Custom Size Document
To cut a size other than the default 8 ½ X 11, you may do the following:
  1. Click on the drop-down arrow next to the "Document Size" box
  2. Select one of the "User Size" options
  3. Click on the button marked "Specify User Size"
  4. You may first assign a new name to your size for future reference (i.e. "QuickStripz)
  5. You may also assign the "Width" and "Length" of your paper size (i.e. 4 Width by 8 Length)
  6. Click on "OK"

Largest: The maximum width of any material is 8.5 inches. The maximum length is 39 inches when cutting without the mat (for materials wide enough to be gripped by the Silhouette's rollers and that have their own adhesive backing), and 12 inches for materials that are either not wide enough to be gripped by the rollers, or that do not have their own adhesive backing.

Smallest: The smallest custom size recommended is 3 inches by 3 inches. Smaller pieces of paper or other material may not be held in place on the cutting mat as well during the cutting process.

You will note there is also an option to change the Orientation between "Portrait" and "Landscape". Altering this will only alter the way you are looking at the cutting area on your screen. It does not change the fixed width and height of how your paper is loaded. For example, the "Letter" size shown above is in "Portrait" orientation and is listed as 8.50 width and 11.00 length. You would load your paper vertically (or lengthwise). If you were to change to "Landscape," the width and height measurements would be switched to show the orientation your screen will show, but you would still load your paper vertically (or lengthwise).

NOTE: "Use Registration Marks" is a feature for "Print and Cut" jobs. We will discuss this function later. Please leave this unchecked for now.
