Section 9: Layering Designs

You have likely noticed that some Silhouette images are very basic, simple cookie-cutter type images you may cut out in a single color while other images are more detailed and show the ability to cut out separate parts of the image in different colors to piece together, much like a traditional die cut.

There are basically two different ways to do cut different parts of certain images out in different colors.

  • Nesting: One method would be cutting the exact same image multiple times with different color papers, and then mixing and matching the different inner nested items within the shape. The process for this would be to simply cut the whole image as many times with as many different color papers or materials as you wish.
  • Layered: The other method would be to separate your image prior to cutting and then cutting only the image parts you want in each particular color so that you can layer your image together once all separate pieces are cut individually.
HOW TO: Cut Layered Images
If you wish to cut an image out in multiple layers (similar to our "DoubleKutz" dies), you may be able to do so with select images by performing the following steps.
  1. Size your image as desired.
  2. Ungroup your image as previously directed.
  3. Once ungrouped, move all pieces of the image you wish to cut in one color outside of the cutting area.

  4. Cut the images that are within the cutting area on your first preferred paper color. During the regular cutting process, the Silhouette will ignore anything that is outside of the cutting area.
  5. Once finished cutting all parts of your image on the first color, move to the next part of the image you wish to cut and place these into the cutting area. Remember to take the first set of image pieces and move them outside of the cutting area.

  6. Cut the images that are within the cutting area on your next preferred paper color.
  7. Repeat step 5 & 6 as desired until all image parts are cut in as many different colored papers you would like.
  8. Piece your image together.
